Listening to Babies 10th Anniversary

Sankofa: Reflecting Back, Planning Ahead

Full Recording

The recording below is of the February 25, 2022 10th and final installment of the Listening to Babies series, "Sankofa: Reflecting Back, Visioning Ahead". Listening to Babies (LTB ) has been an important part of COQEBS School Readiness Committee's "Baby Talk Week" since 2013. The LTB series has highlighted the unique needs of infants and toddlers, distinguishing developmentally appropriate practice for children 0-3 from that for older preschoolers, bringing scholars and expert practitioners from around the U.S. to share emerging best practices from the fields of early childhood development and infant-family mental health with our professional community.

A pivotal component of LTB in recent years, aligned with COQEBS mission, has been on heightening recognition of the impact of structural racism, implicit bias, and cultural competence on the social and emotional development and readiness of young Black children. This year's event reflected on both gains of the past decade, and areas where promise remains to be fulfilled. The event also served as a reference point for future coordinated discussions regarding supports for BIPOC infants, toddlers, and young children birth-to-three and 3-4, and about kindergarten year experiences and supports for Black children and their families.
